Upon the Moose Watch

Opponent- Seattle Mariners

6 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned, 1 BB, 7 K

Mussina (L, 17-8)

A fairly typical outing from Moose, with 1 too many runs. 18-7 is much better looking than 17-8, and this deals a blow to his chances of winning 20.

The Santana comparison is awfully conspicuous in its absence. The Mets have now won his last seven starts, and he has given up 3 or fewer runs in 27 of his 30 starts. That is how an ace pitches in a pennant race!

Did you hear the “MVP” chants at Shea last night? In case you missed it, the chants were for none other than Mr. Carlos Delgado. If the mets win the division and if he ends up at 38/120, he’d be a very worthy candidate. He has more ribbies than Pujols and Berkman, and he has been the player most instrumental in the Mets’ post-Willie resurgence. Voters are suppose to vote for the player most valuable to his team. While his shitty April and May should not be ignored, last night’s game was the kind of game MVP’s have against divisional rivals in September.

Oh yeah, that was a masterful 7 inning performance by your ace….he sure is outperforming Mike Mussina.

Delgado as an MVP would be ridiculous. Why not Ryan Howard? Atrocious batting average with huge power numbers.

  3. Sherm Says:

Very gutsy performance without his best stuff. 7 1/3, two earned, and a win against the team 1 game behind in the standings. I’ll take it. And agreed, “he sure is outperforming Mike Mussina.”

Howard’s rbi totals are more a testament to the excellence of Rollins, Utley and Jason Werth than him. But if the Phillies manage to make the playoffs, he’ll be in the discussion despite his low average. He would have to hit at least ten homers the next three weeks to earn my support with that low BA and OPS and his record breaking K totals.

And if Delgado ends up at .265 with 38 homers and 120 ribbies and continues to carry the Mets to the division title, what would be so ridiculous about voting for him for MVP? Don’t get me wrong. I’m not committing to him as MVP, but he belongs in the discussion with Berkman, Pujols, Aram, Howard, Utley and Braun. Berkman and Pujols are having the best statistical seasons, but their teams are not making the playoffs and the voters always put great emphasis (unfairly or not) on such matters. Aram having a very nice year, but he has not been as important to the Cubs’ success as Delgado to the Mets. Same can be said for Braun. Utley has had a weak second half. As for Matt Holliday (upon whom you have an obvious man-crush which could potentially be satisified by a Yank trade for him this off-season), I saw last week that he has 23 rbi this year outside of Coors Field.

But one thing is for certain, with three weeks remaining in the season, there is no clear-cut MVP in either league right now.

And guess who is number 1 in the majors in quality starts? That’s right. Don’t mess with the Johan. He has 23. CC and Lincecum tied for second with 22. Cliff Lee has 21. Moose in a nine way tie for 11-19 with 19.

  5. Charlie Says:

I honestly can’t believe that you are promoting Carlos Delgado as a possible MVP. Just because a case can be made, does not mean that an unbiased observer should make that case.

I am taking this to the main page.

  6. Sherm Says:

I am promoting him as an MVP candidate. It’s still too early to promote anyone for MVP. If he shits the bed the next three weeks, forget about him. But if he ends up at 38/120 and leads the Mets to a divisional title without a closer, he will be a serious candidate.

Dude, he’s third in the NL in ribbies and 4th in homers.
